2. Benjamin Lee Smith was born on 21 Apr 1916 in Alexander City, Tallapoosa County, AL. He married Laura Velma Peppers, daughter of Lucius P. 'Luther' Peppers and AraAnna Frances Dison, on 23 Dec 1938 in Talladega, Talladega County, AL. He died on 13 May 2010 in Douglasville, Douglas County, GA, at age 94. He was buried on 16 May 2010 in Highland Cemetery, Anniston, Calhoun County, AL. Census: Census: 1920 Alexander City, Tallapoosa County, AL, ED 164, sheet 4A (3 yr - living with parents); 1930 19 First St., Alexander, Tallapoosa County, AL, ED 3, page 1A; 1940 346 Seventh Way, Alexander, Tallapoosa County, AL, ED 62-7, page 5B. He was employed at Russell Manufacturing Co. in Alexander City, AL from 1932 to 1942 as a weaver and loom fixer. He was in the U.S. Army from Oct 1942 to Aug 1943 as a telephone switchboard operator. He moved to Anniston, Calhoun County, AL in 1943. From Sept 1943 to about 1966 he was self-employed as a radio and TV repairman. Also from Nov 1946 to 1977 he was a weaver at the Anniston Manufacturing Company. He wrote about his childhood: "I was born on April 21, 1916 about 3:00 a.m. I understand or was told that my mother was in labor for about six hours. There were no hospitals back then. We lived in a small town called Alexander City in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. My father died just 15 days before I was six years old with his third stroke of paralysis at the age of fifty-four. My mother died at the age of ninety-two, I think from arthritis. I attended school in the building that housed a church and school together. I don't think I ever saw one like it anywhere. It was a company building. The company payed the teachr's salary and everything, I think. That was for the low grades, one through six, I think. They later built a larger building for higher grades. I liked a little finishing the ninth grade. I had to go to work in the weave mill at the age of 14 years old. I worked half time and went to school half time. They worked twelve hours a day then. I worked six hours and then went to school, till I was sixten. And then I went to work full time twelve hours a day for one dollar a day. I was glad to get that, but things began to get better and better, and up and down. My mother married again when I was about nine years old. I was saved by the grace of God at the age of twelve or thirteen. My mother and step-father were church-goers. I met my wife Laura at a revival in Talladega, AL. And I had an old model Ford raodster, and I went back and forth from Alexander City to Talladega to court her. The roads were crooked and were not paved. We were married about six months later on Dec. 23, 1938. Laura worked in a cotton mill just outside Talladetga. in a place called Bemiston. She quit there and went to work in a mill at Alexander City. We left Alex City--in 1942. We went to Talladega for a few months and then went on to Anniston in late 1943 right after our first child was born. Ronnie LaWayne was born Sept. 4, 1943. We had another child on Sept. 19, 1945. We named him Robert Wallace. When we went to Anniston, we moved into a brick store building. And I ran a radio repair service and built us a house to move into. We moved into our new house in January, 1946. And were we proud we had our own house. That was 42 years ago, and we are still here by the grace of God. We are still saved and looking for the Lord to return.".

3. Laura Velma Peppers was born on 5 Jul 1917 in Talladega, Talladega County, AL. She married Benjamin Lee Smith, son of Robert Lee Smith and Josie Jones Trussell, on 23 Dec 1938 in Talladega, Talladega County, AL. She died on 3 Dec 1999 in Anniston, Calhoun County, AL, at age 82. She was buried on 5 Dec 1999 in New Highland Park Cemetery, Anniston, Calhoun County, AL. Census: 1920 ;1930 Lanett, Chambers County, AL, ED 15, page 1B; 1940 Talladega, Talladega County, AL, ED 61-14, page 26A. Occupation: Textile Worker. She was the younger twin of Lawrence. Mom wrote about her childhood: "Our home was full of love and being taken care of by my grandmother, my father's mother. Her name was Nan Peppers. My mother worked in a textile mill from six in the morning until six at night. We would always get to go to the grocery store with her. And if Lucile and I scrubbed the kitchen floor, we would get five cents to spend at the store. My brother would haul the groceries home in his red wagon that he had got for Christmas. "Our grandmother was a very strict person. We had to stay in our yard when we were not at school or being sent someplace. We had a place that we played in for hours at a time. It was a large barn that wood was kept in. The lady next door gave us her old catalogs, and we spent hours cutting out paper dolls. Our childhood was a happy one. We had good times with our friends at school which was located on an acre of land in front of our house. "Our Christmas was really a good time. Our aunts and uncles from Florida always sent toys and books and clothes. One Christmas I got two pair of shoes. One pair had a $ 1 dollar bill tied to the string, but my grandmother wouldn't let me keep it. She bought new socks with it. "Even though I was a shy little girl I was happy. We had no TV then, but people had time for each other. Our cousins came to see us on Sunday, or we went to their house. We always had a big dinner on that day. I got to go to church every Sunday. When I was six years old, I learned the books of the Bible, and lots of Bible verses too over the years. I got saved at 16, and ever since, church has meant a lot to me." Her life was not always easy, but she seemed to see the bright side of things. I miss Mom very much. I believe she is still enjoying life -- her new life with Jesus and lots of people she knew here.

Mary's name does not appear in Uriah Hatcher's family Bible as copied in "Jasper County, Georgia Cemetery and Bible Records", pages 209 - 210. I believe a name and a date have been accidentally omitted. Instead of "Tabitha C. Hatcher, 9-10-1829", there should be two names with two birthdates: "Tabitha C. Hatcher, 7- -1826; Maryann L. Hatcher, 9-10-1829". The census records agree with those dates. There are also other errors in the Bible record.

--- 6th Generation ---

32. Daniel Smith Sr was born circa 1774 in SC. He married ? (--?--) circa 1795 in SC or GA. He died circa 1837 in Henry County, GA. Daniel Sr. was one of the first settlers in Henry County, GA -- "Georgia's Landmarks, Memorials, and Legends", page 680. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1824 to 1833 in Henry County. He sold 202 acres in Henry County, GA to his son Daniel Smith, Jr. on 3 Aug 1827. I believe he was born in South Carolina. He is in these censuses: 1800 Oglethorpe County, GA, page 16; 1820 Columbia County, GA, page 36 or 51; 1830 Henry County, GA, page 200. He is listed in "Georgia Tax Digests, 1800-1802", page 20 in Oglethorpe County. In the 1830 Henry County, GA census Daniel and Peter Jr. (page 230), who may be Daniel's brother, are near each other. Daniel Sr.'s parents are most likely Peter Sr. (1754-1816) and Agnes. Peter Smith Sr. is in the 1790 and 1800 Spartanburg County, SC census. In 1790, page 87, he has one son who is 16 years of age or older (1774 or earlier). In 1800, page 201, he has a son 16 - 25 years old. That would be 1774/75 - 1783/84. So it narrows the birthdate to 1774. I believe 1774 is the date Daniel Sr. was born. There were three other Daniel Smiths in SC in relatively the same time period. One was born in 1752, son of Thomas. Another Daniel was born in 1766 to Charles. Another Daniel was born about 1788 to Fleming. None of these fit the date of birth of Daniel Sr. Also Daniel Sr. is the only one to go to Georgia. The others stayed in South Carolina or went to Virginia.

Dates are from a McClendon family Bible owned by a descendant in Arkansas.

41. Mary Ann Egnew was born in 1803 in SC. She married Charles Asher Trussell, son of Daniel L. Trussell and Nancy Wright, circa 1821 in (Chester County), SC. She died circa 1855 in GA or AL. Census: In 1820 Chester County, SC, there are 3 Egnew's - John, Nancy, and William (either one could be Mary's parent); 1830 Jasper County, GA; 1840 Jasper County, GA, page 67; 1850 Jasper County, GA, page 116. Last name is Agnew in one reference and Egnew in the 1820 census. Her sister-in-law is an Egnew.

42. Uriah Hatcher was born on 1 Mar 1795 in Green County, GA. He married Mary Britton, daughter of John Britton and Mary (--?--), on 12 May 1822 in Jasper County, GA. He died on 12 Oct 1868 in Jasper County, GA, at age 73. Uriah may have served in War of 1812 in Georgia's 3rd Regiment. In the 1810 and 1820 Georgia censuses her parents should be listed. In 1820 John Britton is the only one listed of the right age (45+). Sanford Britton is 10-16 years old.

56. Isaac C. Dison. This Isaac Dison and brother Jesse were of English descent. Isaac married Charity Edds in 1814 in Stokes County, NC. (A little while later he married Mary Long--this is stated by family members-but there is no marriage certificate in NC). Isaac and (Mary or Charity) moved to Anson County, NC, then in 1826 they moved to Sevier County, Tennessee; then to Talladega County, Alabama about 1833. (Mary or Charity) died about 1834. Isaac left his six children with an aunt Gencie Long in Alabama in about 1835, and went to east Texas with his brother Jesse. Unconfirmed reports: Family legend says Isaac struck oil and made a fortune. One family member says he returned to Talladega, AL after making money from oil. Someone else says he began his trip back to Alabama, but was killed by Indians on the way. Another family member says he fought in the Mexican War, and was killed a while later by renegade Indians. Wherever he died, there was a dispute over the land he had in Texas. Bennet Smith and Robert E. Wynne filed court documents for the purpose of taking possession of the land. They also put this article in the newspaper: "LOST-The Conditional Headright Certificate of Isaac C. Dyson, issued to him by the Board of Land Commissioners of Shelby County, for 640 acres of land, second class, No. 144, dated July 6, 1837. If said certificate is not heard from within the time prescribed by law, application will be made to the proper department for a duplicate. Bennet Smith, Robert E. Wynne. Executors of R. W. Smith, dec'd. Henderson. Dec 9, 1852." From this article, we see Isaac's middle initial is "C". Also that he probably died about 1852. Census: 1820 Anson County, NC, page 24; 1830 Sevier County, TN, page 92. In 1820 there was one son 0-10 years old; maybe about 1819. In 1830 there were six children. Two boys 0-5 years old, two boys 5-10 years old, one boy 10-15 years old, and one girl 0-5 years old. Take note that Isaac had FIVE sons at this time. Land grant in Shelby County, TX in 1837. Tax list: 1840 Shelby County, TX. (It may have been in present-day Harrison County, TX). There was no 1840 Texas census, and the tax list substitutes for it. The census shows he was born in 1768, born in AL. If the "AL" is correct, he probably is not Mary's father. But locations on censuses can be wrong. AL didn't become a state until about 50 years later. Isaac's children had an Aunt Gencie Long. It's possible she was married to a son of Reuben Long.
